What Are The Essential Chainsaw Accessories?

Chainsaw ownership does not come without its responsibilities, and one these is ensuring that you keep your machine running at its optimum, as this will help to prevent the possibility of accidents and injury. If you own a chainsaw, you can ensure that it runs as good as new for as long as possible by investing in one or more of these accessories:

Chainsaw Bars and Chains

  • The guide bar is the long, rounded bar that protrudes out of your machine’s housing. They are often made out of a wear-resistant steel alloy and have edged slots to guide the machine as it cuts across a surface. They are available in lengths from 16 inches to 36.
  • The cutting chain (similar in appearance to one used on a bicycle) is attached to the sides of the guide bar. The sharp little segments (known as teeth) spaced along the chain are what cut through the timber; they should never be handled without gloves.

Chainsaw Sharpening and Filing

These accessories are essential for keeping your chainsaw running at its optimum, as using a dull blade can severely damage the machine.

  • A clam-shelled filing kit will provide you with everything that you need for keeping your chain in optimum cutting order, including: file handles, file guides, round files, and flat files (for depth).
  • A depth gauge guide is useful for filing the gauge of your machine; this is a simple process that should be done on every third or fourth chain sharpening.

Chainsaw Safety

When using a chainsaw, the safety of yourself and the people around you should be your primary concern.

  • There is professional safety equipment available for use with a chainsaw, including: helmets, safety glasses or goggles, ear muffs or plugs, thick work gloves, and body gear (such as overalls).
  • If you choose not to purchase your own body gear, you should instead opt for tight fitting clothing whilst using the machine, with shirts buttoned up and long hair tied back.

Other Accessories

There are also a number of other chainsaw accessories that you may find useful in the upkeep of your machine.

  • Replacement parts (including: sprockets, clutches, air filters, and mufflers), are available but you should consult your owner’s manual for more detailed information.

By investing in the above accessories, you can ensure that your chainsaw is kept in optimum working condition for as long as possible. Whilst the bar and chain will come with your chainsaw when you first buy it, you will need to purchase all of the other accessories separately (and you may need to buy replacement bars and chains at some stage).
